A poor brahmana brings a handful of flat rice to his friend Krishna in Dwarka.

Full text of the story

Two boys study together in the same gurukula. One becomes the king of Dwarka, the other a poor brahmana who cannot feed his children. When Sudama finally comes to the palace, he brings the only thing he has — a handful of flat rice tied in a rag, and he is ashamed even of that.

Krishna eats it in front of everyone, embraces him, asks about his wife and children, and never once mentions gifts. What Sudama finds when he returns home is the part children remember for years.

The simplest story in the whole hub for explaining what friendship with the Lord actually means.
