The Request of Sage Vishvamitra

1. Sage Vishvamitra entered Dasharatha's court shining from years of spiritual practice. The king welcomed him with water, a seat and respectful words.
2. Vishvamitra explained that rakshasas were spoiling the sages' peaceful sacrifice. He asked that Rama protect the sacred ceremony.
3. Dasharatha saw Rama as too young for such a dangerous task. He offered to go with his entire army instead.
4. Vishvamitra knew that Rama was no ordinary prince. He asked Dasharatha to keep his promise and trust the Lord's strength.
5. Guru Vasishtha reminded the king that Vishvamitra would guide and protect the princes. Dasharatha slowly let go of his fear.
6. Rama bowed to His father and joyfully accepted the duty. He was happy to protect the sages.
7. Lakshmana lifted his bow and asked to accompany his beloved brother. Rama smiled and welcomed his faithful service.
8. Kaushalya placed her hand on Rama's head and prayed for His safe return. Rama touched His mother's feet before leaving.
9. Vishvamitra walked ahead while Rama and Lakshmana followed with bows and quivers. The people watched until they disappeared beyond the city.
10. At the riverbank the princes washed, prayed and sat upon soft grass. The quiet water reflected the evening sky.
11. Vishvamitra taught them the sacred mantras Bala and Atibala. These gifts would guard them from hunger, tiredness and confusion.
12. The princes rested on the earth instead of palace beds. They were content because they were serving their guru.
13. Before sunrise Vishvamitra gently awakened Rama and Lakshmana. After bathing and prayer, they continued their journey.
14. They reached a forest where birds no longer sang and people were afraid to walk. Vishvamitra told them about the powerful rakshasi Tataka.
15. Rama prepared His bow because a protector must sometimes stop those who harm others. Vishvamitra reminded Him to act for dharma, never from anger.
