The Crown That Waited

1. When Dasharatha grew old, he decided to crown Rama as prince regent. The citizens rejoiced because Rama cared for everyone like family.
2. Streets were washed, doorways decorated and lamps made ready. Sita and Rama fasted and prayed before the ceremony.
3. The maid Manthara told Kaikeyi that Rama's coronation would harm Bharata. Fear entered Kaikeyi's mind even though Rama had always loved her.
4. Manthara reminded Kaikeyi that Dasharatha once promised her two boons. She urged the queen to ask for Bharata's crown and Rama's exile.
5. Kaikeyi lay upon the floor and waited for the king. Dasharatha came happily, expecting to share good news.
6. Kaikeyi asked that Bharata be crowned and Rama live in the forest for fourteen years. Dasharatha was brokenhearted, but a royal promise could not be ignored.
7. Rama entered and listened quietly to Kaikeyi's demand. He agreed at once so His father's word would remain true.
8. Rama spoke gently to Kaikeyi and offered her respect. He did not let injustice awaken hatred in His heart.
9. Kaushalya wept when Rama told her He must leave that very day. Rama comforted her and asked for her blessing.
10. Rama asked Sita to remain safely in Ayodhya, but she wished to share His path. She said that home was wherever Rama was.
11. Lakshmana also refused to be separated from his brother. He promised to build shelters, gather food and guard Rama and Sita.
12. Rama, Sita and Lakshmana exchanged royal garments for simple bark cloth. Their dignity did not depend upon silk or jewels.
13. Sumantra prepared the chariot while crowds gathered outside the palace. No one could believe the coronation had become an exile.
14. The old king reached toward Rama but could barely speak through his tears. Rama bowed to his father and to all three mothers.
15. Rama left Ayodhya without resentment, carrying His father's promise instead of a crown. True honour stayed with Him on the forest road.
