Bharata and Rama's Sandals

1. Bharata and Shatrughna returned to a silent, undecorated Ayodhya. They knew at once that something terrible had happened.
2. Kaikeyi proudly explained the two boons, expecting Bharata to be pleased. Bharata was horrified that Rama had been sent away for his sake.
3. Bharata learned that Dasharatha had left this world while calling Rama's name. The brothers and queens performed the king's funeral rites with sorrow.
4. The ministers asked Bharata to become king, but he would not accept what belonged to Rama. He decided to bring his brother home.
5. The queens, sages, soldiers and citizens travelled with Bharata toward the forest. Hope returned as they followed Rama's path.
6. Guha first feared that Bharata might wish to harm Rama. When he saw Bharata's tears and sincerity, he welcomed him as a friend.
7. Bharata found the marks of Rama's feet on the forest path. He bowed to the dust with love.
8. Rama and Bharata ran into each other's arms after their long separation. Everyone wept to see their pure affection.
9. Bharata gently told Rama that their father had departed. The brothers offered water and prayers for Dasharatha.
10. Bharata placed the kingdom at Rama's feet and begged Him to come home. The citizens joined their palms in hope.
11. Rama explained that He must complete the fourteen years promised by Dasharatha. A true son protects his father's word even when it is difficult.
12. Bharata offered to stay in the forest while Rama ruled. Rama lovingly refused because each brother had his own duty.
13. Bharata asked for Rama's wooden sandals and lifted them onto his head. They would show that Rama alone remained king.
14. Back near Ayodhya, Bharata placed the sandals upon the throne and lived simply at Nandigrama. Every decision was offered to Rama first.
15. Bharata counted each day until Rama's return and cared for the kingdom faithfully. Separation made his devotion stronger.
