Life in the Great Forest

1. After Bharata departed, many visitors continued coming to Chitrakuta. Rama chose to travel deeper into the forest so the sages could live quietly.
2. Sage Atri and his wife Anasuya received Rama, Sita and Lakshmana with affection. Their hermitage shone with peaceful spiritual practice.
3. Anasuya spoke with Sita about faithfulness, patience and kindness. She gave Sita simple garments and fragrant gifts as signs of love.
4. The travellers entered the vast Dandaka forest where many ascetics lived. Tall trees made a green roof above the path.
5. The rakshasa Viradha rushed at them and tried to carry Sita away. Rama and Lakshmana stopped him and freed him from a curse.
6. Released from his frightening body, Viradha became radiant and thanked Rama. He directed them toward the holy sage Sharabhanga.
7. Forest sages showed Rama how rakshasas disturbed their worship. Rama promised to protect those who lived by dharma.
8. Sharabhanga welcomed Rama and then peacefully completed his earthly life in meditation. The travellers continued with his blessings.
9. Sage Sutikshna offered fruits, roots and a safe place to rest. Rama honoured him before visiting other forest hermitages.
10. Rama, Sita and Lakshmana spent many seasons moving between peaceful ashramas. They listened to wisdom and protected the innocent.
11. Sita reminded Rama that weapons should be used only when protection truly required them. Rama valued her compassionate words.
12. The great sage Agastya received the three travellers like long-awaited guests. His spiritual power filled the ashrama with light.
13. Agastya gave Rama a divine bow, arrows and a sword for defending dharma. Rama accepted them with humility.
14. Agastya recommended a beautiful place near the Godavari River called Panchavati. It had water, fruit, flowers and room for a hermitage.
15. Lakshmana built another cottage while Rama and Sita gathered flowers. For a time, Panchavati became their happy home.
